Loveuary Week 2...Love & Jane
We’re back with another week of Jane Austen inspired Hallmark! This week, Love & Jane brought Jane Austen into our modern day lives with Alison Sweeney starring as our corporate working woman fighting off imposter syndrome and general work/life malaise and indecisiveness. Relatable AF protagonist if we are being honest.
Love & Jane is about “Lilly, a hopeless romantic and literary enthusiast, is surprised when her wish to talk to her favorite author comes true and Jane Austen herself appears in her life.”
Similar to Paging Mr. Darcy, this movie is definitely slow to start. Unlike our first movie, I really liked our protagonist, Lilly. Although I am the complete opposite of a hopeless romantic, she otherwise seems like a real person who is trying to find balance between her work with her passion projects. And her passion projects are very similar to mine - books, book clubs, and writing!
The strength in this story is the friendships, particularly the friendship with her female coworker. The weakness is….the Jane Austen “in real life” appearances. She pops up sporadically to give Lilly counsel, but to me it just didn’t deliver anything new that we weren’t already getting from the Jane Austen bookish discussions. Considering that is what this movie is based on, it didn’t do much to drive the story, BUT the story is strong enough either way to keep me interested.
Finally, we have the love story with Trevor. It’s giving major Fox Books energy for those of you who love You’ve Got Mail. Trevor is a more likable Joe Fox without the baggage, which is exactly what we expect from Hallmark. Their story falls into place pretty much perfectly, even if the chemistry isn’t off the charts for these two.
My favorite scene was with Lilly and her female coworker where they are bonding over troubles in love and Lilly perfectly delivers the iconic Austen line:
“Do anything rather than marry without affection”
That seems like sound advice to wrap this up! If you missed the first airing, you can catch this one on Thursday (February 15th) at 8 pm!
